# Formulating A Strategy In Poker

Author: Dave Newgates

Poker is probably one of those few card games that has become so widespread that it is being played all over the world. Indeed, from the wooden bar table, the poker game has come a long way. Nowadays, there’s even a poker game available in Facebook, where players from different countries can come in for a quick session.

One of the biggest draws of poker is that, unlike most other card games, it actually adds strategy to an otherwise purely game of chance. This is what makes it even more engaging, as it gets players into thinking of ways to outdo each other. And so, the quintessential question comes in: how do you win in such a mind game?

Well, since there are more than a dozen different versions of poker, there are as many or even more strategies that you can use. However, there are a few fundamental strategies that you need to learn in order to have a good chance in the table.

One of these is knowing which hand to play and which hand to not. Indeed, this one is the core of any poker strategy. The most important part of this strategy is being familiar with the chances at which each hand in poker will most likely to appear. In your hand. There are actually a lot charts listing the exact mathematical probabilities at which these hands will show up. However, you really need to memorize all of the figures, but instead use them to give you an idea of the best hands to play.

Connected to this is determining when to stick with a hand or not. Many new players often tend to go with a hand just because they have already put a bet on it. While this might be good in some cases, you should also need to discern whether or not it would be favorable for you to let go of your hand in the long run.

And this is where bluffing comes in. Bluffing is a crucial strategy in most poker games. However,a lot of new players, and even some experts, often perform it wrong. Here, one need to understand how to make use of bluffing in order to get a better chance at the table. Do take note however, that this one is something that need to be studied more carefully in order to make it work.

Lastly, poker also involves keen observation. So aside from closely inspecting your cards, you also need to be watching other players too. In fact, even a small gesture, such as a flick of a finger, can give you some information on an opponent’s hand that will help you in deciding what to do with your own hand.
